Bill Clinton on Health Scare

Filed under: Uncategorized — smassa1 at 8:01 pm on Wednesday, February 17, 2010  Tagged ,

Today I was reading People magazine and I came across an article titled “Bill Clinton on Health Scare: I Was Very, Very Lucky”.  This article struck my attention and I decided to read it.  I really enjoyed the way this article was written for a number of reasons.  I really liked the way the arthur got straight to the point so I didn’t have to keep reading forever until it got to the point of the article.  I also liked the way the writer used simple and not complex words.  This made the article easier to read and more enjoyable as well.  Another reason for why I liked this article was because the writer also gave a quick background information paragraph about Bill Clintons past health concerns with his heart.  This helped me to understand his surgery better and to better understand his health history and situation.  I suggest everyone reads this article to keep update with not only our Pop Culture but also our past presidents as well.

Photo courtsey of Flickr user the thePhotoZoo

In this beautiful photograph all I can see is the water and what is appears to be seven tower-like rocks and a small piece of land in the distance. This reminds me of the calm after a storm.  The sky is a light gray color with no other additional highlights.  The water seems to be so calm that one could just float in it without being disrupted.  Above the water there is a wispy, thin layer of fog that is just hovering over the water.  The way the fog is laying in the photo makes it look like there is a light breeze because the fog is swirled in all different directions.

The rock towers are casting shadows onto the water creating a darker color.  The rocks seem to be covered in algae and moss.  Below the first set of the rock towers, there appears to be smaller rocks or pebbles that are half buried into the sand.  These rocks and pebbles are barely visible through the murky water.  The small pebbles almost look like footprints within the sand.

There is also washed up seaweed on the sand where the water meets the shore.  In the distance you can see land which appears to look like an island or mountains.  The effects of the black and white in the photo give the impression that a severe storm just hit and this is the after-math of what had happened.

3D TV’s

Remember when watching a movie in three-dimensional was a huge deal for movies in the theaters?  Now the way media is viewed could be changed forever.  CNN wrote and article about how 3D TV’s are the new rave.  Sony and Panasonic reported that they will release home 3D television systems in 2010; and other company’s such as Mitsubishi and JVC are said to be working on similar products.

I feel that 3D TV’s will change the way home viewers will watch television forever.  Sport games will also be broadcasted in 3D which will make the viewers feel as though they are in the arena and stadium watching the game live.  For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, the action on the field  will be broadcasted in 3D.  FIFA announced that they will be teaming up with Sony to show this technology.  The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa is also said to deliver up to 25 matches in 3D.

Snow News Day

I was watching all of the snow storm coverage Saturday morning when I noticed that Channel 4 News covered the story in a different way.  While the rest of the news stations were just stating the facts such as how many inches it has snowed and when it will stop, Channel 4 News took on a different approach.  They had their viewers send in “snowy” pictures.  These pictures were taken of the blizzard outside of their homes.  Some of the pictures that were sent in showed tables and chairs on their decks buried in snow.  Other pictures showed  residents’ shoveling their driveways, which almost seemed impossible.  Channel 4 News also covered a story about a massive snowball fight in Washington D.C.  This snowball fight was organized through a facebook page and it generated over 6,000 members. It took place in front of the Reeves Center and was said to start around 2 p.m.  This fight was cleverly titled “Snowpocalypse ’10”.

The writer (Carissa Dimargo) of the snowball fight made this news article different from the typical news coverage stories.  She told the story from a different view and wrote about how people turned a intense snow storm into an exciting one.  It’s not every snow storm that people get together from all over a district and have a snowball fight.  This is what made this news about the snow fall new and interesting  It separated itself from all of the other generic news channels covering the same story.  Channel 4 News also had people who were involved in the snow send in pictures of how they were snowed in.  This was also another way for them to cover the story in a new light.

The news values in these two article were proximity, impact and the bizarre factor.  Proximity is used because the news station covered the snowball fight that occurred in Washington, D.C  which is very close to us.  Impact is also used because the snow impacted everyone is the Virginia and Maryland area and that is where the news was being covered.  And lastly the bizarre factor is used because a snowball fight does not occur every day making it bizarre.  These three news values made these two stories about the snow a success.

4.2 News Values 1: Homework

Filed under: Uncategorized — smassa1 at 11:42 pm on Wednesday, February 3, 2010

I used the article, “Jury Recommends Death for 69-Year-Old Grandmother”

1.  In this article the news values that are present are: timeliness, proximity and conflict.  Timeliness is used because this article is written directly after the news happened.  Proximity is another news value because the story is being written in the area which this event has occurred.  And conflict is also a news value because this article involves a crime which a murder occurred.

2 WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, HOW

Who: Faye Copeland

What: grandmother (Faye Copeland) sentenced to death.

When: Tuesday night

Where: Chillicothe, Missouri.

Why: Murdering four transient farm workers whose bodies were found buried last year.

How: Bodies were found buried in northwestern Missouri

3.  Personal sources were used in this article

4. Personal sources are used in each story.  I came to the conclusion that David Miller got his information from the statements to the press and the record of the trail.

5. For this article i would want my editor to check for a couple points of accuracy.  First off i would want the editor to check to make sure that Faye Copeland would be the oldest person to be sentenced to the death row.  Second i would want the editor to check the suspected allegation toward the husband.  These two points could make of break the article if they were found to be proven wrong.

Bye Bye Arenas

Two years went by as Gilbert Arenas was only able to watch his team, the Washington Wizards, struggle mightily on the basketball court as he went through a rehabilitation process to fix his surgically repaired knee.  Now, after finally being cleared to play basketball again, Arenas finds himself in another court…the judicial court. Arenas, once the jokester of the NBA, is now the laughing stock of the league. The man who always loved attention found himself starring in a joke gone wrong when he brought four guns without a license into the Wizards’ locker room. It all started when he and teammate Javaris Crittenton got into a dispute on the team airplane coming back from a game in New Jersey in which Arenas lost a card game and owed Crittenton money that he was unwilling to pay. When Crittenton said that he would shoot Arenas in his surgically repaired knee if he didn’t pay, Arenas came into the locker room the next day with the guns and a note saying to choose a gun to use.

Arenas knew that bringing guns into the locker room is against NBA rules and now he has to pay the consequences.  Once the commissioners of the league got word of this incident, they immediately took action.  The league suspended Arenas for the remainder of the season.  Once Arenas pled guilty to his charges he realized that this entire occurrence has left a negative impression of the youth within D.C. Arenas stated that he is going to try and rebuild his relationship with D.C. youth because he realizes that young children once looked up to him and they should realize that messing with guns is no joking matter.

Arenas has apparently stated that he wishes to no longer play for the Washington Wizards once this season comes to an end. This may be a good thing for the Wizards because now they can start over and rebuild into the next season.  Maybe it’s about time the Wizards search for a new star on the court to lead the team.  However, this time the star should stick to one court, preferably the basketball court.

Movie Review: “Law Abiding Citizen”

“Law Abiding Citizen” stars Gerard Butler who becomes a secret agent who murders unfaithful citizens while being locked up in prision after witnessing his wife and daughter get murdered.  Butler’s great performance led to a fantastic action-packed movie which left me at the edge of my seat during the entire movie.  Four stars.

There was never any doubt that Hannah would become a famous and internationally known jazz singer who was recognized by fans around the world.

Midville is not a large town, but a fairly small place and atmosphere that offers saftey and security to all who live there, including familes with small children.
During this time, Erin did not want to continue paying a college tuition where she was convinced that she was not receiving the best education or getting her money’s worth.

During most of February, Laura stayed cooped up in her room while fighting off the effects of a bad cold.

Hello world!
