4.2 News Values 1: Homework

Filed under: Uncategorized — smassa1 at 11:42 pm on Wednesday, February 3, 2010

I used the article, “Jury Recommends Death for 69-Year-Old Grandmother”

1.  In this article the news values that are present are: timeliness, proximity and conflict.  Timeliness is used because this article is written directly after the news happened.  Proximity is another news value because the story is being written in the area which this event has occurred.  And conflict is also a news value because this article involves a crime which a murder occurred.

2 WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, HOW

Who: Faye Copeland

What: grandmother (Faye Copeland) sentenced to death.

When: Tuesday night

Where: Chillicothe, Missouri.

Why: Murdering four transient farm workers whose bodies were found buried last year.

How: Bodies were found buried in northwestern Missouri

3.  Personal sources were used in this article

4. Personal sources are used in each story.  I came to the conclusion that David Miller got his information from the statements to the press and the record of the trail.

5. For this article i would want my editor to check for a couple points of accuracy.  First off i would want the editor to check to make sure that Faye Copeland would be the oldest person to be sentenced to the death row.  Second i would want the editor to check the suspected allegation toward the husband.  These two points could make of break the article if they were found to be proven wrong.
